Debbie Enever

Author and Podcaster

Introduction:

Debbie Enever is an author and podcaster. Midowed, her debut memoir, was published in 2024 and the Bereaved Parents’ Club Podcast launched in May this year too.

Debbie studied at the Centre for New Writing which is part of the University of Manchester, attaining her MA in Creative Writing in 2021. Having graduated with a Combined Studies BA from the same institution in 1991, she thought enough time had passed for all her misdemeanours to have been forgotten…

Midowed was longlisted for the inaugural Bridport Memoir Prize in 2022.

The Bereaved Parents’ Club podcast seeks to share stories and offer a space for those living with child loss to explore topics relevant to them. Series 1 has been well-received and series 2 will be available from early Autumn.

Debbie describes herself as a bit of a Northern nomad. She’s lived in Glossop, Manchester, Leeds, Huddersfield, and is currently living with her partner in Sheffield. She’s a lifelong Manchester City supporter and avid reader.

About Me

Debbie was born in 1969 but as the 90s were a bit of a chemical haze, considers herself to be still in her forties.

She spent most of her early working life in the voluntary sector fundraising and running projects to support disabled people’s groups. Latterly her role involved supporting disabled university students to access support.

A poignant, beautifully written book
Considering this book has a terrible, heart wrenching tragedy at its core, its overwhelming message is that of love and hope. The ‘real-time’ account has interludes that reveal who Dan is and profoundly show the Mother/Son relationship in all its intricate facets- what is wonderful to feel is this connection continues to grow. The book is so well written, smoothly going from straight forward, matter of fact to heart wrenching and visceral imagery. This is a must read!

A book for parental grief
To lose a child is one of the hardest, loneliest times in someone's life so that fact Debbie can detail such a book that contains so much love, hope and guidance is a true inspiration. Whilst part of the story is about Dan, many parents could relate to the book. Grief is individual but knowing you're not alone, gives a great deal of comfort.

Heartbreaking & Inspirational
I could not ever imagine the feeling of loosing your child and would never know what words to use that would ever be correct. So how Debbie has described and explained her grief and pain throughout the book whilst also being able to make you laugh and feel like you knew her son Dan is truly awesome a must read for anyone x
